wpe8.jpg (33257 bytes) The involvement of China in labor migration has been very minimal. However, migration is affecting China in some major ways. Internal migration triggered by the shift to a market economy has brought a vast number of people (perhaps 150 million) toward the provinces of the East Coast. At the same time, the overseas Chinese diaspora, estimated at perhaps 20 million, has played an important role in facilitating new migration and in channeling investments into the mainland. Trafficking of Chinese migrants, particularly to Japan and the United States, has received wide exposure in the media.
