Foreign population in Hong Kong | Domestic workers by country of origin |
|
Migrant workers in Hong Kong fall under three categories: domestic
workers, construction workers, and guest workers hired according to quotas of specific
industries. Domestic workers (80 percent from the Philippines) are the largest group. The
number of construction workers has greatly decreased with the completion of the new
airport. Because of the crisis, the salary of domestic workers was reduced by 5 percent. A dispute on the mainland children of Hong Kong residents with right of abode in Hong Kong has been settled by Beijing, but is still appealed. According to the reinterpretation, eligible children could be in the range of 200-300,000, much less than the feared 1.67 million. |
