Immigration to Taiwan began in earnest in 1992 with the adoption of
the Employment Service Act. Migrants are allowed for specific industries and mainly from
countries of Southeast Asia (particularly Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and
Malaysia). They are employed mostly in construction, manufacturing and domestic services
and should not remained in Taiwan for more than three years.
